Q: I’ve never taken a dance class before but I want to try it. Are there special classes for beginners?
A: Some classes are easier to jump into than others. The classes on our drop-in schedule are led by teachers who know that you may drop-in! Just know that the first class is always the hardest! Give it at least two or three tries!
Q: May I observe a class before I take one?
A: We encourage you to jump in! Give it try! Your first drop-in class is $10. We have found that it makes the participants in class feel uncomfortable if someone watches an entire class. If you would like to peek in for a couple of minutes, that is no problem. A quick observation is not available for classes happening in the small studio, yoga, private lessons or performances, or workshops.
Q: Can my friend/partner/child watch once I’m in a class?
A: Unless your friend/partner/child is enrolled in class, we prefer that they don’t watch an entire class (see above). We do have classes just for kiddos! Otherwise, we recommend childcare so you can focus entirely on your dancing!
Q: What should I wear to class?
A: Be comfortable. You will get warm, so plan on removing layers when the weather is cold. Your clothes should allow for maximum movement and comfort.
Q: What kind of shoes should I wear? Can I wear my regular shoes?
A: This depends on the class you are interested in taking. We do have a shoe library with social dance shoes, ballet shoes, tap shoes, and jazz shoes. We don’t have everything in all sizes. When in doubt, bring CLEAN street shoes that stay firmly on your feet.
Q: Where do I park?
A: You may park on the street for $1 an hour. You may also park in the Central Park Parking Garage right across the street from the DDC. The first hour is free and we can offer you a parking pass to pay for the second hour.
Drop-In Classes and Sessions
Q: Who can attend a University of Montana class?
A: Anyone! Community members and UM students are welcome. UM students must register for the class through the university. Community members may take the class for $99 a semester or $10 for a drop-in.
Q: Am I able to join a class mid-session?
A: It depends. You will have to call into the studio and discuss options. We want you to get the most out of your dance experience. If you have never trained in a style before and want to join the third or fourth class into a session, you will likely feel too far behind. In this case, it is better to join the next session. They are many opportunities to dance before the next session starts (usually). Call the studio and we can help you pick the best option for you!
Q: What happens if I miss a class that is part of a session?
A: We do not offer refunds for classes missed. We offer classes and pay teachers based on the numbers of people signed up for classes and paying for a session. Our instructors are happy to spend extra time with you to get you up to speed. In extenuating circumstances, we can offer a refund on a session.
Q: Do I need to bring a partner to social dance?
A: No, you do not! Plenty of people come without partners and that is no problem. Some people are single and some do have partners in life, but not for dance class. All are welcome!
Q: Are there age restrictions on social dance classes?
A: Generally speaking, anyone can join us, but 13 and older is preferred.
Q: Do you offer private lessons?
A: Yes, we do. We can do lessons for youngers and olders and everyone in between. We can help you get ready for a wedding, bar mitzvah, special occasion, or if you just want to learn a few steps in your own time. We can work with your schedule and can possibly be available 7 days a week.
Memberships and Payment
Q: Can I give a class as a gift?
A: Yes, we have gift certificates available for any denomination and any service.
Q: What is membership and what are the perks?
A: Membership is $15 if you are a student and $25 generally. You receive discounts on classes all year long. Your membership also supports our First Friday Program, Artist in Residence and Company in Residence Program, as well as our donations to local organizations. We donate space and lessons all year long!
Q: Can I share a membership? What about a punch card?
A: We always have a 2 for 1 membership! If you are two students, you still share the $25 membership. Punch cards may be shared, but not the unlimited packages. Social dance packages cannot be shared.
Q: Can I share a discount?
A: Rules and guidelines should be listed with discounts, but most discounts are not to be shared.
Q: How does autopay work?
A: We charge your credit or debit card once a month for 1 year and you get unlimited drop-in classes for 12 months!
