Dance Out of the Dark’s (DOTD) mission is to provide an opportunity for youth, ages 13 and up, who need a place to find community, kinship and a light where there is darkness. DOTD creates an environment where youth can express themselves in dance activities and are encouraged to participate in a fun and interactive manner.

In the state of Montana, suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death. Missoula County is the 2nd highest for the number of suicides in the state of Montana especially between the ages of 15-24. 69% of the cases of suicide were people who struggled from depression, followed by PTSD, Bipolar disorder, and anxiety as other potential influences.

Dance Out Of The Dark is a program that will utilize dance as a tool for dealing with depression, anxiety and stress. A dance professional will guide fun and energetic classes with teens and adults ages 13 and older, structured to release the sometimes paralyzing grip depression, anxiety and stress can cause.  Participants are only asked to come with an open mind and are not required to speak specifically to their situation, although a licensed counselor will attend all classes for participants who need access to community resources.

An important piece of the program is that participants who are struggling feel safe and welcome.  AND that they feel like they can just let go and depart from their troubles for just a little bit. Friends and family are welcome to attend.

DOTD is a new program of the  Downtown Dance Collective at 121 W Main St, Missoula, MT 59802.
